Phase I Principal Investigator Meetings

Each year the Department of Energy (DOE) SBIR/STTR Programs organizes a Principal Investigator (PI) Meeting for the small businesses that are awarded a Phase I SBIR or STTR grant that year. There are two PI Meetings per year, one for Phase I Release 1 and one for Phase I Release 2. Only Phase I Release 1 awardees can participate in the Phase I Release 1 PI Meeting. Only Phase I Release 2 awardees can participate in the Phase I Release 2 PI Meeting.

All PI’s and their respective DOE Program Managers are expected to attend the PI Meeting. Program Managers from other DOE Programs may also attend.  Representatives from the Phase I small business other than the PI may also attend. All attendees must register to attend the meeting, using the cohort’s meeting website (see below).

The objectives of the PI Meetings are to:

  • Promote a sense of community among Phase I grantees across fiscal years, Program Mangers, DOE-SBIR staff, state-level resource providers, representatives from other agencies and the investor community.
  • Deliver critical information to SBIR awardees for successful completion of Phase I grants and delivery of high-quality Phase II applications.

The objectives are met through:

  • Plenary presentations on topics such as the Phase II application, funding requirements / opportunities, state-level resources, DOE lab partners, IP protection, and other areas of interest.
  • Informal networking with speakers, panelists and colleagues.
  • One-on-one networking meetings with DOE SBIR/STTR staff, the DOE Commercialization Assistance contractor, DOE Program Managers, investors, other Government agencies, and DOE SBIR/STTR mentors.
