Commercialization Resources

Commercialization is a statutory goal of the SBIR/STTR programs.  Congress wants to see return on investment (ROI) of the non-dilutive funds used to fund SBIR/STTR awards whether it be in the form of taxable revenues, job creation and/or scientific/societal benefit.

Commercialization is hard. The DOE Office of SBIR/STTR programs has several programs that are free to eligible applicants and awardees and are designed to make your path to market less challenging aimed at increasing your chances of successful commercialization.  Click on each program in the graphic below or keep scrolling to learn more.

Technical and Business Assistance (TABA) Program

Need help preparing and executing your commercialization plan? SBIR/STTR Phase I & II awardees are eligible to receive TABA funds to pursue eligible technical and commercialization services.

Phase Shift (formerly Energy I-Corps)

Recently redesigned in 2023, the Phase Shift program now offers opportunities for both Phase I and Phase II teams.  While focusing on different elements of the business model during each phase, the approach of hypothesis-driven business model exploration is the same across the offerings.

Virtual Commercialization Workshops

The DOE SBIR/STTR programs office provides virtual commercialization workshops on commercialization topics that are typical areas of weakness for awardees with the goal of improving the commercialization outcome of DOE SBIR/STTR funded technologies.

Market Research Studies

As part of our Phase 0 program, the DOE Program Offices participating in SBIR/STTR have commissioned various market research studies related to SBIR/STTR topic areas. These are publicly available to facilitate commercialization planning for SBIR/STTR applicants and awardees.
