How to Apply

When you apply for a grant the first time it may seem daunting. However, the first thing you should know is that the Office of Science requires that all financial assistance applications be submitted through Grants.gov . This website allows organizations and individuals to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies, which of course includes DOE’s Office of Science. Grants.gov is the access point for more than 1000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies.

The second thing is that you must register with Grants.gov. You can not submit an application unless you register first. This is a onetime thing. You can register either as an organization or as an individual. Normally this takes three to five business days but can take longer if you do not provide all required information. Here’s the link: http://www.grants.gov/applicants/get_registered.jsp. Once you are registered, you then may login to Grants.gov and as an applicant find much information, for example, find grant opportunities, apply for grants, and track your application. There are even resources for help and FAQs.

Finally, a third thing to know is you should submit your application minimally six months prior to an expected award date. If you apply too late, you will not be considered for an award.
