About

Scientific communication and storytelling are essential skills for early career researchers, enabling them to effectively convey complex research findings to diverse audiences. Join us for a webinar featuring three outstanding speakers who will share their valuable insights on scientific communication, ranging from traditional scientific writing and presentations aimed at technical audiences to engaging books, videos, and talks designed for non-technical audiences.

Speakers

Professor Michael Alley is a teaching Professor of Engineering Communication at Penn State University. He is dedicated to helping faculty integrate effective writing into their classrooms and has authored many numerous articles on scientific research communication. Notably, he is the author of ‘The Craft of Scientific Presentations’ and his website on presentations is a top Google listing for engineering writing and presentation.

Professor John C. Besley is an Ellis N. Brandt Professor of Public Relations at Michigan State University. His aim is to enhance the effectiveness of science communicators through evidence-based, strategic communication. Dr Besley has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and was a lead author for the National Science Board chapters on public attitudes and knowledge about science and technology for 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020.

Professor Sophia Hayes is the Vice Dean of Graduate Education and a Professor of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focuses on understanding the structure and properties of various inorganic systems, including semiconductors and other optically and electronically active materials. As part of her efforts to train scientists in communication, she has testified before Congress on the helium crisis and delivered a TEDx talk on climate change.
