Allocation Reduction Information
New for the 2026 Allocation Year: The ALCC program is implementing a single, semi-annual allocation reduction of unused allocated hours.
To promote efficient operations and use of the ASCR HPC facilities, it is important that each ALCC project pace its use of allocated resources over the program year.
In instances where a project is not using its allocation at the pace articulated below, ASCR will reduce the project allocation as follows:
On November 1, 2026:
If a project has used less than 10% of its allocation, ASCR will reduce the allocation by removing 25% of the unused balance.
If a project has used greater than 10% but less than 25% of its allocation, ASCR will reduce the allocation by removing 15% of the unused balance.
On March 1, 2027:
If a project has used less than 25% of its allocation, ASCR will reduce the allocation by removing 50% of the unused balance.
If a project has used greater than 25% but less than 50% of its allocation, ASCR will reduce the allocation by removing 25% of the unused balance.
The project Principal Investigator(s) will receive email reminders two weeks prior to the planned allocation reduction and will be notified of their current usage.
A project’s Principal Investigator(s) may request an exemption to this policy in writing one week prior to the planned allocation reductions; requests should be sent by email to ASCR-ALCC@science.doe.gov. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
