The webinar on Science Communication is on April 29th from 2:30-3:30 pm (EDT)/11:30 - 12:30 pm (PDT) and will consist of two short, 20-minute talks on effective communication with 10 minute breaks for transitioning and questions. The webinar will cover communication methods in general and communicating science in outreach settings with the focus on skills needed to communicate effectively outside of the expert-to-expert interactions many of us have experienced in our graduate and post-doctoral work.
Speakers
Mr. Bingham is Director of the Oral Communication Center at the University of Wyoming, and a senior lecturer in the Department of Communication and Journalism. His academic interests include apprehension, public speaking, interpersonal communication, business and professional communication and computer mediated communication. Specifically, the influence social validation plays in society and the media equation. Beau has won communication awards at leadership conferences in Idaho, Texas and Pennsylvania. His love and passion is in the classroom where he earned the Blaine Goss Teaching Award. Beau also focuses on helping students with all aspects of speech development, including choosing a topic, delivery and speech fright. His talk, entitled WHAT??? I have to present a presentation? will focus on how to develop presentations, organize presentations, and how to combat the fears associated with talking in public settings.
Ms. Barnett is the Executive Director of Community Resources for Science (CRS), a science education program based in the San Francisco Bay Area that aims to connect science professionals, museums, and enrichment providers, among others, with local elementary and middle-school classrooms to enhance the quality of scientific education received by young students. These connections are fostered through several programs including Teacher Membership where assistance with scientific resources and curriculum is provide directly to teachers, the Bay Area Scientists in Schools (BASIS) program which connects local scientists with classrooms for individual lessons, and the Science Super Star Challenge which provides challenges and best practices to teachers while also recognizing their efforts to better incorporate science education into their classrooms. Her talk will focus on facilitating effective communication between scientific experts and general populations in educational settings as well as methods for avoiding common pitfalls/barriers to effective communication.
