Dr. Rahn joined the U. S. Department of Energy in 2011, as the program manager for the Separations and Analysis Program.  Prior to joining the DOE, Dr. Rahn was a Senior Scientist in the Transportation Energy Center at Sandia National Laboratories (Livermore, CA).  From 2006 through 2010, he worked on assignment at DOE from Sandia for the Separations and Analysis Program and, for shorter periods, with both the Gas-Phase Chemical Physics Program and the Heavy Element Chemistry Program.

After earning his Ph.D. in physics at Kansas State University and performing postdoctoral studies at Michigan State University, Dr. Rahn joined Sandia where he contributed to early efforts that led to the founding of the Combustion Research Facility (CRF).  He became a principal investigator in the BES Chemical Science Program at the CRF, earning a promotion to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff and election to Fellow of the Optical Society of America.  After seventeen years of research in laser-based combustion diagnostics, he managed the Reacting Flow Research Department at the CRF for almost a decade, when he was promoted to Senior Scientist.

Dr. Rahn’s research has resulted in more than 60 journal publications in Raman and nonlinear optical spectroscopy, combustion diagnostics, molecular physics, solid state physics, and collaborative data sharing environments.
