Benefits
The CCI program offers the following benefits to the participants of the program:
Program Terms and Training
- Duration: Internships are typically 10 consecutive weeks during the Fall, Spring and Summer term.
- Flexible Scheduling (Optional): During Fall and Spring terms, a few host laboratories may offer a "flex-schedule" option. This allows the equivalent of 400 onsite hours to be spread over a 16-week period. Stipends for flex-schedule appointments are prorated based on a 40-hour work week, while any housing allowance remains based on a 10-week appointment. This option is at the discretion of the host laboratory.
- Technical Project Focus: Participants engage in technical projects at a DOE Laboratory under the guidance of a scientist or engineer.
- On-site Experience: All internships are conducted on-site; remote participation is not available.
- Enrichment Activities: Host laboratories offer professional development workshops (e.g., technical and scientific writing skills development, poster, or oral presentation activities, etc.), laboratory tours, scientific lectures, and seminars.
- Site-Specific Training: All necessary site-specific training will be provided by the host laboratory.
Financial, Travel, and Lodging Support
- Stipend: Participants receive a weekly stipend of $650.
- Travel Reimbursement:
- One round-trip domestic travel reimbursement is provided for participants whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from the host laboratory.
- Reimbursement is based on the most direct route.
- Private automobile travel is reimbursed at the current government rate, up to a maximum of $500 or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower.
- Air travel is reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare.
- Housing Support:
- Information regarding housing will be provided to eligible interns prior to arrival at the host laboratory. Housing options vary by laboratory.
- An allowance is available for participants placed at laboratories that do not offer direct housing arrangements.
