Dr. Helen Kerch is team lead for Scattering and Instrumentation Sciences in the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). She joined DOE in 1993 and managed the neutron and x-ray science programs for the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division in the Office of Basic Energy Sciences. Additionally, she has been involved in several interagency working groups (IWG) for the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), including the Research Integrity Panel, which formulated the first government-wide policy on research misconduct, and the IWG on Neutron Science, which assessed the status and needs of major neutron scattering facilities and instruments in the United States.

Her graduate research included the topics of sol-gel processing, quantitative electron microscopy, and small-angle scattering. She worked in the Electron Microscopy Group at Unilever Research following receipt of her doctorate. Afterward, she joined the x-ray and neutron scattering group in the Ceramics Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. There her research focused on the development of neutron instrumentation for in-situ high temperature measurements and nanostructured materials.
