Before joining BES in May 2022, Dr. J. Aura Gimm held several program manager positions in Department of Defense research offices, where she gained wide experience in directing research programs ranging from basic science to technology development. In her most recent position as the Director for Biological Sciences in the Office of Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Dr. Gimm provided guidance and oversight of the Department of Defense’s science and technology investments and modernization efforts in biological sciences.  Previously, Dr. Gimm managed a multidisciplinary basic research portfolio in biological materials at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.  She has also served as a science program manager at the Army managing two University-Affiliated Research Centers focused on nanomaterials and biotechnology.

Dr. Gimm received her Ph.D. in bioengineering from UC-Berkeley and two S.B. degrees from MIT. Prior to her federal service, Dr. Gimm taught biomedical engineering at Duke University, focusing on biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and engineering design.
