Dr. Kini joined the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences in February 2002 as the program manager for Materials Chemistry and Biomolecular Materials. He is presently the team lead for the Materials Discovery, Design and Synthesis team. Prior to joining DOE (1986-2002), he worked as a staff scientist in the Chemistry and Materials Science Divisions at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois.

Dr. Kini has conducted research in broad scientific areas such as organic photochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, organic solid state chemistry, superconductivity, and materials science. He has published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, several review articles, a book-chapter and a book on organic superconductors.

He received the U. S. Department of Energy award-Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment in Materials Chemistry-in 1990. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Materials Science and Engineering.
