The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program, is issuing a $100 million funding opportunity announcement for new and renewing Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs). These multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary teams conduct fundamental research that address priority research directions and opportunities identified by a series of BES workshop and roundtable reports. EFRCs aim to accelerate transformative advances in energy science by integrating synthesis, characterization, theory, computation, and data science; developing innovative experimental and theoretical tools that illuminate fundamental processes in unprecedented detail; and creating an enthusiastic, inter-disciplinary, diverse community of energy-focused scientists.

BES is soliciting new applications for basic science in two topical areas: 1) co-design of materials and processes to revolutionize fabrication for microelectronics and/or quantum information science, and 2) environmental management. BES is soliciting renewal applications for basic science in three topical areas: 1) transformative manufacturing, 2) quantum information science, and 3) environmental management.
