Ultrafast Materials and Chemical Sciences FOA

February 21, 2014

DOE BES announces the publication of a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for Scientific Discovery through Ultrafast Materials and Chemical Sciences. The FOAs, DE-FOA-0001089 (for grant applications) and LAB 14-1089 (for national laboratory applications), was posted on February 21, 2014.

The FOA is available at:

Highlights for the FOA follow.  Please go to the full FOA (links above) for additional information and requirements:

  • The minimum award size is $400K/year and the maximum award size is $1.0 M per year for a project period of up to three years.
  • Approximately $4,000,000 per year will be available, contingent on satisfactory peer review and the availability of appropriated funds.
  • Proposed hypothesis-driven research should extend ultrafast techniques to uniquely attack a significant research problem
    • Ultrafast optical probes for direct characterization and control of energy relevant chemical processes at the level of the electrons and manipulation of highly correlated electron systems in condensed matter
    • Free electron laser science to investigate time-resolved phenomena correlated electron excitations and complex chemical systems
  • Collaborative teams performing both experiment and theory research are mandatory.
  • Applications focused on new source development, demonstration efforts, and/or systematic, exploratory surveys of broad scientific areas will be considered non-responsive.
  • Letters of intent are required, and due 03/17/2014 at 5 PM Eastern Time
  • Full proposals are due 04/21/2014 at 5 PM Eastern Time
  • Program contacts are Lane Wilson (Materials Sciences and Engineering Division) and Jeffrey Krause (Chemical Sciences, Geosciences and Biosciences Division)
