Benefits
The SULI program provides comprehensive support and valuable experiences for its participants.
Program Terms and Training:
- Duration: Internships are typically 10 consecutive weeks during the summer term or 16 consecutive weeks during a semester term.
- Research Focus: Participants engage in research projects at a DOE Laboratory under the guidance of a scientist or engineer.
- On-site Experience: All internships are conducted on-site; remote participation is not available.
- Enrichment Activities: Host laboratories offer professional development workshops (e.g., technical and scientific writing skills development, poster, or oral presentation activities, etc.), laboratory tours, scientific lectures, and seminars.
- Site-Specific Training: All necessary site-specific training will be provided by the host laboratory.
Financial, Travel, and Lodging Support
- Stipend: Participants receive a weekly stipend of $650.
- Travel Reimbursement:
- One round-trip domestic travel reimbursement is provided for participants whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from the host laboratory.
- Reimbursement is based on the most direct route.
- Private automobile travel is reimbursed at the current government rate, up to a maximum of $500 or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower.
- Air travel is reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare.
- Housing Support
- Information regarding housing will be provided to eligible interns prior to arrival at the host laboratory. Housing options vary by laboratory.
- An allowance is available for participants placed at laboratories that do not offer direct housing arrangements.
