Dr. Michael Smith is an educator, geoscientist, and science policy leader with over 30 years of experience connecting scientific research, education, and public service. Currently, Michael teaches Geology, Fluvial Geomorphology, AP Environmental Science, and AP Biology at University School, in Hunting Valley, Ohio. He has demonstrated his dedication to inspiring students and fostering a deep sense of environmental stewardship by creating interdisciplinary field-based projects that challenge students to apply science to real-world problems. Recently, Michael’s geology students completed a three-year study of an unstable streambank, laying the groundwork for a grant application to restore the stream and presenting this research at the National Stream Restoration Conference. He integrates civic and environmental engagement into his instruction, reflecting a strong alignment with national STEM and policy goals. Michael holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and geology degrees from Rice University and The College of Wooster.

Michael began his career as a geologist with Shell Oil and Chevron Resources, conducting oil and gas exploration in the Niger Delta and mineral exploration in the western U.S. He later worked on groundwater pollutant transport studies at hazardous waste sites and contributed to Antarctic research on glacial history—experiences that shaped his understanding of natural resource development and environmental responsibility. As Education Director at the American Geosciences Institute, Michael led national initiatives to improve Earth science education, including curriculum development, public outreach, member society forums, and teacher training programs. Directing 12 different NSF-funded projects and supervising seven staff, his work has helped shape how natural resources, environmental systems, and energy literacy are taught nationwide.

Beyond the classroom, Michael has developed curricula for the National Park Service, judged Ohio’s state science fair, served on advisory boards for the Chagrin Scenic River Council and numerous NSF programs, and worked on STEM reform initiatives and standards at the state and national level. He is the author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles, co-author of widely used science textbooks, and has given more than 100 presentations at geoscience and education conferences. Michael has been honored as an Outstanding Earth Science Teacher by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
