Mr. Kyle Kuhlers has taught business and computer education for 22 years in rural and urban Iowa high schools, the last seven years at Waterloo Community School District in the Waterloo Career Center. The last four years have been exclusively Information Technology and Cybersecurity education. Before teaching, Mr. Kuhlers was an IT professional for 6 years at Oral-B Laboratories toothbrush manufacturing facility. He has a BBA from the University of Iowa in Finance and Marketing, along with teaching certifications in Business Education, Information Technology Endorsement, and Computer Science Endorsement. In 2023, Mr. Kuhlers completed the University of Louisville National Cybersecurity Teachers Academy Certification, which included 12 graduate credit hours of learning over two summers.
The Cybersecurity program Mr. Kuhlers started in Fall 2021 was recognized as an Iowa STEM Best Program in the Spring of 2022. A few of Mr. Kuhlers awards include Technology Association of Iowa Educator of the Year, CSTA Regional Computer Science Teaching Excellence Award, and Cedar Valley Gold Star Teacher of the Year. Kyle is currently working on the Association of Career and Technical Education Engineering and Technology Ed Division Policy Committee. Additionally, Kyle has a passion for presenting at multiple national, state, and local conferences on expanding rural education opportunities, creating work-based learning collaborations with community partners, and engaging community partners in the classroom. Kyle has served on the Iowa Computer Science Advisory Committee since 2017, where he was a part of adopting and now reviewing Computer Science state standards.
Mr. Kuhlers’ passion is building community relationships that translate into opportunities for students entering the workforce, especially in rural areas. He has demonstrated this through his unique ability to build positive relationships with community members, parents, students, and the local business community. Kyle’s approach to problem solving is exploring ideas out of the box in an engaging way to gain buy-in to benefit all stakeholders. He believes every person, including his students, are lifelong learners with technology education being vital for our future.
