Dr. Sally Seidel appointed as Interim HEPAP Chairperson

Dr. Sally Seidel, Professor of Physics at the University of New Mexico, has recently been appointed Interim Chairperson of the HEPAP Committee (High Energy Physics Advisory Panel). Dr. Seidel was appointed interim chairperson of HEPAP in May 23, 2023 and her term as interim chairperson runs through March 25, 2024. The High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) has advised the Federal Government on the national program in experimental and theoretical high energy physics (HEP) research since its inception in 1967.

Dr. Seidel earned her B.S. in Physics from Yale University and her M.S. and PhD. in Physics from University of Michigan. She is a faculty member of the University of New Mexico’s Collider Physics Group and a collaborator on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider housed at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Switzerland. She is also an editor of several scientific journals, has held leadership positions in technology development for physics instrumentation, and organized multiple conferences and workshops on advances in science and technology.

The ATLAS experiment focuses on discovery and understanding of massive fundamental particles and was part of the effort to discover the Higgs boson in 2012. Seidel’s research focuses on improving the understanding of heavy quark bound states, which in turn can help to elucidate the strong force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. Her group also works on developing innovative particle-tracking detectors.

"I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this role for our particle physics community. I look forward to participating in the P5 process which will lead to recommendations with far-reaching implications for future research."

We are excited to welcome Dr. Seidel in her new role.
