About

The BES Early Career Network (ECN) is thrilled to announce a Fireside Chat with Dr. Ismaila Dabo. Fireside Chats are virtual, hour-long events where an ECN member talks with the speaker about their career path, lessons they have learned, and any advice they have for early-career scientists, followed by questions from the audience. The purpose of BES ECN Fireside Chats is to create a platform where graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career scientists can be inspired by scientific thought leaders, gain insights into diverse career paths, and foster meaningful discussions. So, don't miss this incredible opportunity to learn from a visionary leader!

Speaker

Dr. Ismaila Dabo is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He began his academic journey in France at the Ecole Polytechnique, obtaining a B.Sc. and M.Sc., then continued to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a Ph.D. degree. Before his current position at CMU, he was a tenured associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Physics at the Pennsylvania State University. He has been recognized for accomplishments in both research and teaching, receiving awards such as the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the Wilson Teaching Excellence Award, the Montgomery-Mitchell Teaching Innovation Award, and the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER), amongst others. He is currently on an international appointment at CMU-Africa, a CMU campus located in Kigali (Rwanda), to promote materials science and engineering education across the African continent, keeping close ties with the CMU-Pittsburgh campus. Dabo’s research stands at the frontier between materials science, condensed matter physics, applied mathematics, and computer science with the goal of breaking down the complexity of materials problems and guiding the development of energy technologies.
