The Office of Science is seeking two summer interns through the Pathways Student Internship program to serve as Management and Program Analysts in the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs (ODDSP) in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC).  Each intern will have the opportunity to work with SC staff on projects which have wide-reaching impacts to the scientific community and policymakers.

Each of these interns will pursue different projects within SC, both include efforts with data discovery, data management, and data analysis.  Additional details for these two internships are provided below:

  • SC collects extensive data on users from scientific user facilities located across the DOE laboratory complex and other host institutions. These scientific user facilities allow researchers from across the globe conduct research at no cost to them, as long as they publish their work in open literature. The data provides insights into how users access the facilities, trends in topical research areas, the geographic distribution of uses, and so much more. SC collects, cleans, and publishes this data annually, and is exploring new ways of streamlining the cleaning process by pursuing additional technical tools and methods. For questions, please contact Mariam Elsayed at mariam.elsayed@science.doe.gov.
  • SC maintains extensive data on Interactive Grants Map at hundreds of universities, national laboratories, and other institutions across the country. This data is collected by an internal SC software system but additional cleaning and curation is needed to publish annual lists of awards for use by a variety of internal and external stakeholders.SC is looking to better understand stakeholder needs, streamline the cleaning and curation process for this data, and provide new tools and methods for analyzing and sharing information publicly. For questions, please contact Michael Cooke at michael.cooke@science.doe.gov.
