Dr. Shakiyya Bland from Lawrence, Kansas serves as a Secondary Instructional Learning Coach, District Mathematics Curriculum Coach, and Pacific Educational Group Equity Affiliate. She taught both elementary and secondary students for more than 10 years in Japan (Department of Defense Education Activity), Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas. She was selected as the 2015 Secondary Educator of the Year and 2019 Champion of Equity by Lawrence Public Schools. Dr. Bland earned her B.S. in Education and Mathematics at the University of Kansas and her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at Northcentral University. She published her research on secondary educators’ use of guided inquiry to increase student engagement in mathematics in November 2019. The research is being used to support authentic problem-based and community-centered mathematics. In 2018, Dr. Bland began consulting on the topic of inquiry-based mathematics and partnered with the Kansas State Department of Education as a Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Certified Consultant, facilitating professional learning workshops about culturally relevant pedagogy throughout the state of Kansas.

A strong advocate for improving mathematics education, Dr. Bland wrote a curriculum unit on the use of geometric modeling and food sustainability that was published in March 2020 by Corwin Press, High School Mathematics Lessons to Explore, Understand, and Respond to Social Injustice. As a consulting educator with BetterLesson, Inc. Master Teacher Project, Dr. Bland produces culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies to support all educators and scholars as seeing themselves as valuable contributors of mathematics. Dr. Bland plans to engage in future research of her dissertation topic investigating the effectiveness of professional development programs and school support variables for integrating guided inquiry at the secondary level.
