Alexandra Laing has been serving as a K-12 STEM Instructional Specialist for the School District of Palm Beach County for the past two and a half years and supports schools across the district in meeting their unique STEM professional development and content development needs through researched and data-driven best practices. Prior to this role, she taught fifth grade STEM integrated courses with a focus on science and mathematics for six years and taught eighth grade physical science while serving as Department Chair and School Improvement Team Member for three years. Ms. Laing has a B.S. Integrated Studies in Elementary Education with a concentration in Science and English Language Arts, a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from American College of Education, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership: K-12 School Leaders at Florida Atlantic University. Ms. Laing has endeavored to impact local, state, and national initiatives including presenting at the NSTA National Conference on the implementation of standards-aligned project-based learning and facilitating the Next Generation Summer Science Symposium in partnership with the Florida Department of Education. Ms. Laing has been recognized and awarded for her contributions and dedication to education. These awards include the 2015 Boca Raton Rotary Club Teacher of the Year, 2015 J.C. Mitchell Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and 2016 Florida State Science Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Ms. Laing believes in educating the whole child through an inquiry-driven, problem-based- learning approach and supports the ongoing development of teacher pedagogy through personalized professional development to support teacher retention. Ms. Laing has served as a science content reviewer for the Florida Department of Education, has worked to develop and support a district-wide STEM Certification pathway, supports the initiatives of the local Palm Beach County STEM Education Council to meaningfully partner businesses with the School District of Palm Beach County, and has supported teacher professional development through grant acquisition and management.
