Stephanie Sparks joined the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs as Assistant for International Programs in July 2013. Her responsibilities include assisting on international matters by providing information and support to Office of Science Programs to facilitate collaborations, collecting, analyzing, and archiving data on international interactions within the Office of Science, and serving as an international program liaison within and outside of DOE. She graduated from Virginia Tech in May 2013 as an Honors Scholar with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering. Prior to joining the Office of Science, Ms. Sparks served as a research assistant for an advanced multifunctional materials laboratory in Blacksburg, VA where she was responsible for materials characterization. While studying abroad at the Technical University of Denmark, Ms. Sparks engaged with engineers from Novozymes, where she later worked as an intern modeling downstream processing of microorganisms which resulted in recommendations to increase product yield. As an undergraduate, she received many scholarships and awards, including leadership awards and research awards for her work on the physical chemistry of polymer crystallization.
