Patrick Glynn joined the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs as Senior Technical Policy Advisor in September 2008. His responsibilities include liaison with the Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) for issues related to bioenergy, biofuels, and systems biology research, and he serves as SC-2 lead for communications and public affairs. He previously served as Program Manager of the DOE Bioenergy Research Centers in BER, where he managed the start-up of three $25 million-per-year multidisciplinary research centers designed to accelerate the basic research needed to make cellulosic (plant fiber-based) biofuels cost-effective and commercially viable on a national scale. For his role in this effort he received The Secretary’s Excellence Award in 2009. Prior to assuming duties in BER, he served as Senior Technical Advisor in the Office of the Director, Office of Science, which he joined in November 2005. His career has spanned government, academe, and the nonprofit and private sectors. In the mid-1980s he was Special Assistant to the Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He has been a Resident Scholar in foreign and defense policy at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and was an Advisor to the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland. He served as Associate Director of the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies at The George Washington University and later worked as Vice President of Marketing and Senior Vice President/Project Manager for high-tech firms in the private sector. He received an A.B summa cum laude in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and also holds A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in the same field from Harvard. He has written widely for national magazines and newspapers on subjects ranging from foreign and defense policy to religion and science. He is the author of two books, Closing Pandora’s Box: Arms Races, Arms Control, and the History of the Cold War (New Republic Books, 1992) and God: The Evidence: The Reconciliation of Faith and Reason in a Postsecular World (Forum, 1997), a national bestseller.
