Dr. Kaitlyn Schroeder-Spain is a 2018-2020 AAAS S&T Policy Fellow in the DOE’s Office of Science (SC) working to facilitate and draft international agreements for science cooperation, develop practices and policies to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), generate briefing materials to inform leadership, coordinate cross-office and interagency actions, maintain an internal SC database of international agreements, and explore areas where SC’s interests intersect with her field of expertise of ocean and coastal science. Prior to joining SC, Dr. Schroeder-Spain earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology summa cum laude, with a minor in chemistry, from the University of North Texas and PhD in Coastal and Marine System Sciences from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi (TAMUCC); she was a Sea Grant Knauss Marine Science Policy Fellow (2015-16) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) where she supported and co-drafted an interagency report under the National Ocean Policy and conducted an internal workforce study for the Division of Ocean Sciences; and she taught undergraduate and graduate students at TAMUCC (2012-17) and University of Miami (2017-18). Dr. Schroeder-Spain has researched and published work on the effects of toxicants in coastal systems and physiological adaptions in fishes; organized undergraduate outreach events and seminar series promoting participation in research experiences; and mentored undergraduate students in the laboratory.
